This step is vital in trying to find the problem that your car has. Usually, it’s the customer who can provide the answers to these questions: What is the problem? When did you first notice it? Where were you when you noticed the problem? How did you try to fix it? All of these questions are important in trying to find the cause of the problem.

Do Research

Mechanics can go on the internet and get some background information about the issue. They can also ask their fellow mechanics if they have encountered the problem before; this also counts as research.

Form a Hypothesis

Then, the mechanics should form a proposed explanation based on limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation. It counts as an intelligent supposition on what the problem is supposed to be. If it is a difficult problem, try to make your hypothesis broad and make it more specific as you go along. That ensures issues are not overlooked.

Do an Experiment

Now is the time to test the mechanic’s hypothesis. He takes out his tools and tests his theory based on the hypothesis he formulated. If the problem is not fixed, he goes back to forming a new hypothesis and testing it again. Experimenting should be done until the real problem can be determined. Of course, when the problem is found, the mechanic should fix it the best way he knows how.

Analyze the Data and Draw a Conclusion

Once the experiment is done, it is time to analyze the data that was collected. Then, the mechanic concludes what the problem was and what caused it. It might be a faulty engine, parts of the car that needs replacement, or simply something that needs cleaning.

Communicate the Results

It is now time for the mechanic to tell the customer what the problem was and how they were able to solve it. Adding some information on how the car owner can avoid the same problem in the future would be great. Most customers appreciate that and would go a long way in getting repeat business.

Fixing a car is no easy feat, and it helps to apply the scientific method to find the problem right away. Maybe not all mechanics do all of the steps mentioned above, but they do at least 4 of the steps. If they do not, it would be impossible to fix anything. It might not be hard to find a mechanic in Austin, but it would help if you can find someone who applies the scientific method. That will ensure that your car is in good hands.
